HBM Explained!

AMD is about to release their new line of GPUs, "AMD FURY".One thing that everyone is talking about is the HBM technology which power these GPUs.

WHAT IS HBM?

HBM stands for High Bandwidth Memory.HBM is a high-performance DRAM memory.AMD and Hynix are together working on this new technology.

HBM AND GDDR5

Currently, almost every high-end GPU uses GDDR5 technology. But as the demand for detailed/realistic graphics increases, GDDR5 would not be able to cope up with the demands.

HBM, on the other hand, is more efficient than GDDR5.

It supports 100GB/s bandwidth, almost 4 times as that of GDDR5.

It's power efficient ie., can work at low voltage levels with the same efficiency.

A powerful GPU needs to have an efficient cooling system. With the Fury X, you get a highly efficient cooling system.

A major advantage of using HBM is the amount of space occupied by the chip on the PCB board.HBM chips can fit easily in tighter places. This will allow the designers to decrease the size of the GPU.

IS HBM LIMITED TO GPUS?

No, not at all. AMD is currently working to implement the same technology in their APUs as well. But it will take time.

HBM powered APUs will be much more efficient and would increase the processing speed by a substantial amount.

That's it!
